OBS stream keeps disconnecting and reconnecting: fixes

OBS logs "Disconnected from" and "Reconnecting in 2 seconds" when the link to the ingest breaks mid-stream. Fix the network path, bitrate and reconnect settings.

What it looks like in your log

[rtmp stream: 'simple_stream'] Disconnected from rtmp://live.example.com/app
[rtmp stream: 'simple_stream'] Reconnecting in 2 seconds..

Why does my OBS stream keep disconnecting and reconnecting?

A "Disconnected from" line means the connection to the server was closed after the stream had started, and "Reconnecting in N seconds" means OBS is retrying. Common causes are a Wi-Fi or ISP connection that stalls, a bitrate above your real upload, a router, VPN or antivirus that resets long-lived connections, or the ingest server restarting. Each cycle freezes the stream for viewers, and with many reconnects the platform may end the broadcast.

How to fix it

  1. Use wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi and close anything else uploading (cloud backup, game updates).
  2. Run a speed test and lower the video bitrate to about 75% of your upload; turn on dynamic bitrate in Settings → Advanced → Network.
  3. In Settings → Advanced → Network, keep "Automatically reconnect" on with a short retry delay and a high maximum retry count.
  4. Pick a closer or different ingest server; for Twitch use the Auto server and check it with TwitchTest.
  5. Turn off VPN or proxy, and exclude OBS from antivirus network scanning to see if the resets stop.
  6. If you stream to your own server, check its logs for the reason it closed the connection (timeouts, auth, stream limits).
